Ingredients

  • 1 cup basmati rice
  • 1 cup green peas
  • 2-3 tablespoons oil
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon ginger paste
  • 1 teaspoon garlic paste
  • 2 green chillies, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon red chilli powder
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 cups water

  • Knife

Method

  1. Rinse and soak the rice in water for 30 minutes.
  2. Heat oil in a pressure cooker and add cumin seeds.
  3. When the cumin seeds start to splutter, add chopped onions and sauté until they turn translucent.
  4. Add ginger paste, garlic paste, and chopped green chillies. Sauté for a few seconds.
  5. Add turmeric powder, red chilli powder, coriander powder, and garam masala. Mix well.
  6. Add green peas and mix well.
  7. Drain the water from the soaked rice and add it to the pressure cooker. Mix well.
  8. Add 2 cups of water and salt to taste. Mix well.
  9. Cover the pressure cooker and cook for 2-3 whistles.
  10. Let the pressure cooker cool down on its own.
  11. Once the pressure is released, open the lid and fluff the rice with a fork.
  12. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves (optional).
  13. Matar rice is ready to be served.

  • You can add more vegetables like carrots and beans to make the dish more nutritious.
  • You can adjust the spice level according to your taste.
  • You can also cook this dish in a regular pot instead of a pressure cooker. Just increase the cooking time to 30-35 minutes.
