Description

Lime Rice, also known as Elumichai Sadam in Tamil, is a traditional South Indian dish that is tangy and flavorful. It is a popular rice dish that is made with rice, lime juice, and a blend of spices. This dish is perfect for lunch or dinner and is easy to make.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of Basmati rice
  • 2 cups of water
  • 1/4 cup of lime juice
  • 2 tablespoons of oil
  • 1 teaspoon of mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon of urad dal
  • 1 teaspoon of chana dal
  • 2 dried red chillies
  • A pinch of asafoetida powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon of turmeric powder
  • 1 tablespoon of chopped cilantro
  • Salt to taste

Equipment

  • A pot
  • A frying pan
  • A spatula
  • A knife
  • A cutting board

Method

  1. Rinse the rice and soak it in water for 30 minutes.
  2. Drain the water and add 2 cups of fresh water to the rice. Cook the rice until it is fluffy and tender.
  3. Heat oil in a frying pan and add mustard seeds, urad dal, chana dal, and dried red chillies.
  4. Once the mustard seeds start to splutter and the dals turn golden brown, add asafoetida powder and turmeric powder.
  5. Stir for a few seconds and add the lime juice.
  6. Mix well and turn off the heat.
  7. Add the cooked rice to the frying pan and mix well.
  8. Add salt to taste and cilantro.
  9. Mix well and serve hot.

Notes

  • You can add grated coconut for an extra flavor.
  • You can also add roasted peanuts for a crunchy texture.
  • Adjust the amount of lime juice according to your taste.
