Ingredients

  • 2 cups Basmati rice
  • 1 large Onion, chopped

  • 1 tsp Fennel seeds
  • 2 Bay leaves
  • 1 Cinnamon stick
  • 4 Green Cardamom pods
  • 4 Cloves
  • 1 tsp Turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp Red chili powder
  • 1 tsp Coriander powder
  • 1 tsp Cumin powder
  • 1 tsp Garam Masala powder
  • 2 tsp Salt
  • 4 cups Water

Method

  1. Wash the Basmati rice and soak it in water for 30 minutes.
  2. Heat the vegetable oil in a large pot over medium heat.
  3. Add the chopped onion and sauté until it is translucent.
  4. Add the chopped tomatoes and cook until they are soft.
  5. Add the cumin seeds, mustard seeds, fennel seeds, bay leaves, cinnamon stick, green cardamom pods, and cloves to the pot and cook for 1 minute.
  6. Add the turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, cumin powder, garam masala powder, and salt to the pot and cook for 2 minutes.
  7. Add the soaked Basmati rice to the pot and stir well to coat it with the spices.
  8. Add 4 cups of water to the pot and stir well.
  9. Bring the water to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and cover the pot with a lid.
  10. Cook the rice for 20-25 minutes, or until the water has been absorbed and the rice is tender.
  11. Fluff the rice with a fork and serve hot.

Notes

You can add vegetables like carrots, peas, or potatoes to this dish to make it more nutritious.
