Ingredients

Method

For the jeera rice: 1. Rinse the rice in cold water until the water runs clear. 2. In a large pot, add the rice, water, cumin seeds, ghee, and salt. 3. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and cover the pot. 4. Cook the rice for 20 minutes or until all the water has been absorbed. 5. Remove the pot from the heat and let it sit for 5 minutes, then fluff the rice with a fork. For the dal fry: 1. Rinse the lentils in cold water until the water runs clear. 2. In a medium pot, add the lentils, water, onion, tomato, cumin seeds, coriander powder, red chili powder, turmeric powder, garlic, ghee, and salt. 3. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and cover the pot. 4. Cook the dal for 25 minutes or until the lentils are soft and fully cooked. 5. Using a wooden spoon, mash the lentils to create a creamy consistency. 6. In a frying pan, heat some ghee and add the mashed lentils to the pan. 7. Fry the dal for 5 minutes or until it becomes slightly browned. 8. Serve the dal hot with the jeera rice.

Notes

For a vegan version of this dish, substitute the ghee with vegetable oil or vegan butter.
