Ingredients:

For the Jeera Rice:
  • 1 cup basmati rice
  • 2 cups water

  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds

For the Dal Tadka:
  • 1 cup yellow lentils (moong dal)
  • 3 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon ghee
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tablespoons chopped coriander leaves

Equipment:

  • Pressure cooker
  • Pan
  • Spatula

Method:

Jeera Rice:

  1. Wash the rice in water and soak it for 10 minutes.
  2. Heat ghee in a pan and add cumin seeds. Fry for a few seconds.
  3. Add the soaked rice and fry for a minute.
  4. Add water and salt to taste. Cover the pan and cook on low heat until the rice is cooked.

Dal Tadka:

  1. Wash the lentils in water and soak it for 10 minutes.
  2. Pressure cook the lentils with water and salt for 3 whistles.
  3. Heat ghee in a pan and add cumin seeds. Fry for a few seconds.
  4. Add chopped onions and fry until they turn golden brown.
  5. Add ginger-garlic paste and fry for a minute.
  6. Add chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt. Cook until the tomatoes become soft and mushy.
  7. Add the cooked lentils and mix well. Cook for 5-10 minutes on low heat.
  8. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves.

Notes:

  • You can adjust the spice level according to your taste.
  • If you don't have a pressure cooker, you can cook the lentils in a pot. It will take around 30-40 minutes.
  • You can add more vegetables like carrots, peas, and capsicum to the dal tadka.
  • You can serve this dish with raita, pickle, and papad.
