- 1 cup basmati rice
- 1 1/2 cups water
- 1 cup fresh green peas
- 2 tablespoons oil
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1 bay leaf
- 2 cloves
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 1 onion, chopped
- 1 teaspoon ginger paste
- 1 teaspoon garlic paste
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder
- 1/2 teaspoon garam masala powder
- Salt to taste
- Chopped fresh coriander leaves for garnish

- A large pot with a lid
- A spatula
- A cutting board and a knife
- A measuring cup and spoons
Method
- Rinse the rice in cold water and soak it for 30 minutes. Drain and set aside.
- Heat oil in a large pot over medium-high heat. Add cumin seeds, bay leaf, cloves, and cinnamon stick. Fry for a few seconds until fragrant.
- Add chopped onion and sauté until translucent.
- Add ginger and garlic paste and sauté for another minute.
- Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, and garam masala powder. Mix well.
- Add fresh green peas and sauté for a minute.
- Add rice and mix well. Add water and salt to taste. Bring to a boil.
- Reduce heat to low, cover the pot with a lid, and let it cook for about 18-20 minutes or until the rice is cooked and the water is absorbed.
- Turn off the heat and let the rice rest for 5 minutes.
- Fluff the rice with a fork and garnish with chopped fresh coriander leaves.
- Matar rice is ready to serve.

- You can use frozen peas if fresh ones are not available.
