Ingredients

  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon ginger paste
  • 1 teaspoon garlic paste
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garam masala powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Chopped fresh coriander leaves for garnish

Method

  1. Rinse the rice in cold water and soak it for 30 minutes. Drain and set aside.
  2. Heat oil in a large pot over medium-high heat. Add cumin seeds, bay leaf, cloves, and cinnamon stick. Fry for a few seconds until fragrant.
  3. Add chopped onion and sauté until translucent.
  4. Add ginger and garlic paste and sauté for another minute.
  5. Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, and garam masala powder. Mix well.
  6. Add fresh green peas and sauté for a minute.
  7. Add rice and mix well. Add water and salt to taste. Bring to a boil.
  8. Reduce heat to low, cover the pot with a lid, and let it cook for about 18-20 minutes or until the rice is cooked and the water is absorbed.
  9. Turn off the heat and let the rice rest for 5 minutes.
  10. Fluff the rice with a fork and garnish with chopped fresh coriander leaves.
  11. Matar rice is ready to serve.

  • You can use frozen peas if fresh ones are not available.
