  • Turmeric Powder – 1/4 tsp
  • Red Chili Powder – 1 tsp
  • Salt – as per taste
  • Water – as required

Method

Follow these steps to make kadala curry:
  1. Soak the black chickpeas in water overnight or for at least 6-8 hours.
  2. Drain the water and rinse the chickpeas well.
  3. Pressure cook the chickpeas with enough water and salt for around 4-5 whistles or until they are soft and cooked.
  4. In a heavy-bottomed pan, heat oil and add mustard seeds and cumin seeds.
  5. When they start to splutter, add chopped onion and sauté until they turn translucent.
  6. Add green chili, ginger, garlic, and curry leaves and sauté for a few seconds.
  7. Add chopped tomato and sauté until they turn soft and mushy.
  8. Add coriander powder, cumin powder, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt and mix well.
  9. Add cooked chickpeas along with the water and mix well.
  10. Add coconut milk and mix well.
  11. Simmer the gravy for around 10-15 minutes or until it thickens to the desired consistency.
  12. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with rice or roti.
