Description

This recipe is a twist on traditional Rice Krispie Treats. The addition of Oreos and black food coloring gives them the appearance of lumps of coal. They are a fun and festive treat for the holiday season, or any time of year. Plus, they are easy to make and require only a few ingredients.

Prep Time

The prep time for this recipe is approximately 10-15 minutes.

Cook Time

There is no cook time required for this recipe.

Ingredients

  • 6 cups Rice Krispies cereal
  • 1 package (10 oz) marshmallows
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 package (14.3 oz) Oreo cookies, crushed into small pieces
  • Black food coloring
  • Optional: white candy melts for decoration

Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • 9x13 inch baking dish
  • Non-stick cooking spray
  • Spatula

Method

  1. Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with non-stick cooking spray.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, melt the butter in the microwave for 30 seconds.
  3. Add the marshmallows to the melted butter and microwave for an additional 30 seconds. Stir the mixture until the marshmallows are completely melted.
  4. Add black food coloring to the marshmallow mixture until it reaches your desired color. Keep in mind that the Rice Krispie Treats will become slightly lighter in color once the cereal is added.
  5. Add the Rice Krispies cereal and crushed Oreos to the marshmallow mixture. Stir until everything is well combined.
  6. Transfer the mixture to the greased baking dish and press it down firmly with a spatula or your hands.
  7. Let the Rice Krispie Treats cool for at least 30 minutes before cutting them into small squares.
  8. If desired, melt white candy melts and drizzle them over the top of the treats for decoration.
  9. Store the treats in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.

Notes

Make sure to crush the Oreos into small pieces before adding them to the mixture. This will ensure that they are distributed evenly throughout the treats. You can adjust the amount of black food coloring to your liking. Just keep in mind that a little goes a long way. If you don't have white candy melts, you can use melted white chocolate chips instead.
