Ingredients

  • 1 cup basmati rice
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon ghee or oil
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 tomato, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala powder
  • 1 cup chana dal or yellow split peas
  • 3 cups water
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 tomato, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 green chili, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala powder
  • 2 tablespoons chopped coriander leaves
  • Salt to taste

Method

Jeera Rice

  1. Wash the basmati rice and soak it in water for 20 minutes.
  2. Heat ghee or oil in a pan and add cumin seeds.
  3. When the cumin seeds start to splutter, add chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.
  4. Add chopped tomatoes, ginger-garlic paste, turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, and garam masala powder. Cook until the tomatoes are soft.
  5. Add the soaked and drained rice and mix well.
  6. Add 2 cups of water and salt to taste.
  7. Cover the pan with a lid and cook on low flame until the rice is cooked and all the water is absorbed.
  8. Fluff the rice with a fork and garnish with chopped coriander leaves.
  9. Jeera rice is ready to serve.

Dal Fry

  1. Wash the chana dal or yellow split peas and soak it in water for 30 minutes.
  2. Cook the soaked dal in a pressure cooker with 3 cups of water for 3-4 whistles or until it is soft and cooked.
  3. Heat oil in a pan and add cumin seeds.
  4. When the cumin seeds start to splutter, add chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.
  5. Add chopped tomatoes, ginger-garlic paste, green chili, turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, and garam masala powder. Cook until the tomatoes are soft.
  6. Add the cooked dal and mix well. Add salt to taste.
  7. Add water if required to adjust the consistency of the dal.
  8. Cook the dal on low flame for 5-7 minutes.
  9. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves.
  10. Dal fry is ready to serve.

  • Jeera rice and dal fry can be served with any Indian side dish like vegetable curry or raita.
